Post Game Q&A with Joel Thompson and Saia Faingaá

Saia Faingaá

With 46 Test matches for Australia during a five-year international career under his belt, rugby union clearly runs through the blood of Saia Faingaá. Four sons in this proud family of Tongan and Aboriginal heritage are professional rugby players, with Saia having started his career at the age of 11.

Saia’s talent was obvious from the get-go, and he was chosen as a member of the Brumbies Academy from the age of 14, before being selected for the Australian School Team in 2003 and 2004. From there, he went from strength to strength. Saia made his Super 14 debut in 2006, playing his first senior match with the Brumbies against the Stormers in Cape Town. Later that same year he captained the Australian Under 19s team to win the IRB World Championship in Dubai.

In total, Saia earned 127 super rugby caps with the Brumbies and Queensland Reds, before signing on to play with the Queensland Reds for the 2009 season – alongside his twin brother Anthony. He made his Test debut for Australia in 2010 against Fiji in Canberra, and then played in all 18 matches of the Reds 2011 Super Rugby title-winning season. In 2011, Saia was selected – again, alongside his brother Anthony - in the Wallabies squad for the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand, where Australia took third place.

Saia announced in 2017 that he would move to England after signing for newly promoted Premiership side London Irish. Since retiring from professional sport, Saia established Moonyah Services, Moonyah Workforce and Madji Furniture, a 100% Indigenous owned and operated company of which he is managing director. He has also co-founded a charity with his twin brother Anthony aiming to raise much needed awareness and funds for breast cancer research.

Joel Thompson

Joel Thompson is a proud Ngiyampaa man from Ivanhoe, in far west New South Wales, and a rugby league player of great renown following a distinguished sporting career spanning 13 years at an elite level.

Honing his talent in the local junior competitions, Joel was selected to play with the Australian Schoolboys team in 2006, and the Junior Kangaroos in 2007. The Canberra Raiders came knocking on Joel’s door after seeing his obvious talent on the field, and he ended up playing for them as well as the St George Dragons and Manly Sea Eagles. From 2010-2020, Joel played in the National Indigenous All-Stars team, and had the honour of honour of captaining them in 2020. Joel finished his league career at St Helen’s RFC in the Betfred Super League Competition in the United Kingdom before retiring due to injury.

Joel’s biggest impact on sport however may be more to do with his off-field work. Having grown-up in an unstable environment where domestic violence and drug and alcohol abuse were rife, Joel often engaged in self-destructive behaviour which threatened his career and caused significant mental health challenges.  After a breakdown in 20112, Joel sought professional help, and over time developed strategies to reshape his life and forge resilience. This inspired a passion and purpose to help others, and he regularly delivers his Mindset mental health and wellbeing workshops with schools, businesses, community groups.

Joel also continues to work on behalf of the NRL with community organisations community organisations such as the Australian Indigenous Leadership Centre, and in 2016, he was awarded the prestigious Ken Stephen Medal for his ongoing work in the community.

Since retiring from professional football, Joel works as a Business Development Manager and Indigenous Engagement for an Indigenously owned, Brisbane based company called the Thee Group
