Toowoomba companies travel to Mackay to seek out opportunities to service Adani mine

Businesses from southern Queensland have travelled north to Mackay to explore supply-chain opportunities with the Adani mine, rail and port projects.

Initiated by Toowoomba and Surat Basin Enterprise, a group of 11 captured early information from the project last week.

TSBE General Manager - Surat Basin Supply Chain, Reagan Parle said the two-day trip provided the opportunity for a sample of businesses operating in the Surat Basin to get among the mix at the Bowen Basin Mining Club staged Adani Roadshow events.

The roadshow was an opportunity to hear about the upcoming mine, rail and port projects and meet representatives from Adani.

Amongst the group, Toowoomba firms included TSBE Platinum members Stonestreets Coaches and Wolff Group.

Mr Parle said both businesses are examples of the national capability of the region that were able to service the future projects.

“Stonestreets has the capacity to compete for contracts in remote areas and has proven itself multiple times with contract wins in Gladstone, Far North Queensland including Weipa, Darwin and other areas over the past four years. Wolff group have carried out mine operations for firms such as BMA, Peabody and Wesfarmers," Mr Parle said.

“We see the Adani mine, rail and port as an emerging opportunity. We know the Toowoomba and Surat Basin has competition ready companies and our role is to provide those business development opportunities."

“TSBE also identifies that Toowoomba has enhanced connectivity with weekly flights from Wellcamp airport to Townsville through Airnorth."

“Townsville is where the regional office will be located for the $21billion project and we can easily get workers with expertise to there.”

Part of the TSBE Supply Chain work for TSBE members is to arrange business development meetings and direct and link them to tendering opportunities.

“This is not the first time we’ve led groups to investigate the opportunities in supply chain."

“Adani has communicated a decision is to be made on the project in 2017, and some primary topics of supply chain interest include accommodation, transport and logistics, and infrastructure establishment and we can compete for that.”

The Toowoomba Transport and Logistics Symposium hosted by TSBE is on from February 27- March 1 and is a chance for businesses to learn more about the road, rail and air capabilities of our region and nationally.
