It was fantastic to be able to sample and judge the best beef in our region last week, thanks to our ever-popular Darling Downs Beef Battle. The event showcased Queensland’s finest meat-producing region to restaurateurs, chefs, procurement teams, and the steak-loving public both near and far. Well done to Stanbroke for taking out the title with their Diamantina Wagyu. The event helps develop stronger relationships between suppliers and the food and hospitality industry, both locally and across the state.

Speaking of beef, we were proud to partner with Nutrien Ag Solutions to deliver the Beef Cattle Husbandry Field Day at the TAFE Rural Centre of Excellence. The event highlighted the best practices in general animal husbandry, including the methods of application, new treatments and pain relief. The importance of animal husbandry methods and animal management is not to be underestimated as they impact health and production.

We enjoyed hearing from APA at our Chinchilla Enterprise Breakfast, who, with ARENA, have contracted Southern Queensland Gas to design, build and test a renewable methane demonstration project in Wallumbilla – the first of its kind. We were provided an overview on renewables and the role that APA can play in the future energy mix and how renewable methane can be produced locally and distributed nationally. Sterling & Wilson also spoke about the Western Downs Green Power Hub project, a large solar farm project near Chinchilla that is approaching the construction phase. Once complete, this will be one of Australia's largest operating solar farms, helping the Western Downs to become the energy capital of Australia.

This month, we were delighted to launch the Taste Western Downs magazine in partnership with the Western Downs Regional Council, highlighting the best of the region’s produce. With the Western Downs renowned for their rich agricultural land, Taste Western Downs shines a spotlight on not only the incredible food grown locally, but also the stories of the farmers and families who produce the products.

The Toowoomba and Darling Downs sections of the $11.2 billion Inland Rail project is now one step closer to commencement, with documents for the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) now released to the bidding consortiums. Three consortiums have been approved to bid on the PPP which will form the Gowrie to Kagaru section, the largest and most complex of the entire project. With the Toowoomba and Darling Downs sections of Inland Rail providing up to 2,000 jobs and 4-5 years of construction, this project will be a game changer for the region and once construction is complete will enable Toowoomba to become a transport and logistics hub with hundreds, if not thousands, of ongoing jobs.

As always, if there is any way we can support your business please call us on (07) 4639 4600.

Final Enterprise Evening for 2020

Our last Enterprise Evening for 2020 will be on 10 December at Oaks Hotel Toowoomba.

We invite you to join us to farewell 2020, and take the opportunity to network for the final time this year.

Attendees will hear about an exciting new development, as FKG Group Director, Strategy and Innovation, AATLIS, Thomas Hall will discuss the AgTech Hub project that will reshape and support the growth of an Agrifood innovation ecosystem in our region.

If you are looking to diversify your product, or learn how to get involved in one of the largest growth areas currently around, this will be a great chance to network and hear direct from industry partners.

Our next Enterprise Evening after this one will be in February 2021.

Congratulations Qteq

Congratulations to TSBE gold member, Qteq on the announcement of the acquisition of Prospect Group Pty Ltd. The merger of this Queensland based company, specialising in environmental and disaster monitoring, allows Qteq to further support a wide range of clients right through the core of the Environmental 4M space across Australia (Measure, Monitor, Manage and Mitigate).

Congratulations to the whole team - we look forward to seeing the additional services role out in 2021. More information here.

Our team

Our E&I team have been busy passing on tenders to members to keep opportunities coming through. In the last six weeks, we have sent out over 100 tenders to 332 members wither directly or through the TSBE Exchange. This month, one member advised us they were awarded a $1.65M contract from a tender that was passed on.

If you want to ensure you are making the most of these opportunities please contact Hayley or Daniel.

Inland Rail

Tender documents are now out to the three consortiums who are bidding on the large PPP section from Gowrie to Kagaru, near Beaudesert in Queensland.

The Request for Proposal (RFP) phase is to determine which consortium will win the contract to construct the largest section of the Inland Rail project. This includes a 6.2km tunnel through the Toowoomba Range, the longest diesel freight rail tunnel in the Southern Hemisphere, two smaller tunnels and numerous bridges, viaducts and track development.

ARTC are also working with contractors for the construction packages for the Gowrie to North Star sections. With contractors starting to engage in the community, now is the perfect time to nominate your skills to work on such projects by registering on the TSBE Supplier Portal. All businesses are encouraged to register their skillset to supply goods and services for major projects like Inland Rail. It’s a great way to understand how you can be involved and promote your capability. More information here.

New Acland Project

It is disappointing to note that New Hope Group have again had to reduce numbers of staff on the New Acland project at Oakey. With the election out of the way, we call on newly appointed ministers to support this project and make a decision in favour of Stage 3 that will support the families and community of Oakey that so desperately need jobs.

Productivity & Profitability Depend on Talent

As business leaders, it is important to conduct regular ‘health checks’ across all areas of your business, including your talent.

As well as staying well connected, take the time to invest in new learning opportunities to refresh and improve on skills across your workforce.

Whether it be by providing entry level accredited training support, by upskilling current workforce around modern technologies or new practices, or by attending industry-to-industry workshops and events.

This takes time out of our busy daily activities, but is a key to ongoing success and growth.

For all learning event inquiries in 2021, please contact our Industry Engagement Manager Jade Hauser on 0439 256 099.

Small Group Discussions

Our final small group workshop will be held on 7 December at the Rural Centre of Excellence. We are looking forward to hearing from RDH Integration Services on how to maximise the adoption of new technologies into the agricultural and food sectors, with a focus on the intensive farming sector.

Shell's QGC Emerging Exporters Program

Mentoring and support for our Shell's QGC Emerging Exporters is continuing as participants are finalising branding and marketing collateral to assist with the next steps in the journey of exploring international markets. Although COVID-19 has presented a number of challenges in delivering the program in 2020, we are hopeful next year will provide greater opportunity to develop participants value proposition and grow opportunities internationally.

The Emerging Exporters Program is calling on food and agribusinesses across the Western Downs interested in participating in the 2021 program. The program is aimed at helping businesses develop their domestic market opportunities with the view to export, building export capability and developing a product with a view on longer-term opportunities abroad.

The program is designed to give local agribusinesses across the Western Downs the support and tools to investigate global export markets, with support delivered through a series of workshops providing an overview of what you can expect and detail around the support provided for participants in becoming export ready.

Food and Agribusiness

The Australian Government’s International Freight Assistance Mechanism (IFAM) program continues to support local exporters across the region, although there is still available flight capacity from Toowoomba to Singapore.

If you are currently exporting, it is critically important that we utilise these routes to ensure ongoing IFAM support for Queensland exporters is available in 2021.

After eight years of negotiations, Australia has recently signed the landmark Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) trade agreement.

The RCEP will improve market access and our competitiveness across 14 Indo-Pacific countries, increasing supply chain opportunities for local exporters. This agreement will extend our existing FTAs in the Asia-Pacific region.

The agreement will be ratified in 2021, with participating countries including members of the ASEAN region, along with China, Japan, New Zealand and the Republic of Korea.

The agreement will provide improved measures to combat non-tariff trade barriers across the participating countries, new rules for trading online, greater IP protection and set standards for customs and quarantine.

The Southern Queensland Export Hub will participate in a Virtual Meet the Buyer session targeting the Vietnam market on 8 December.

Oil, Gas and Energy Resources

TSBE member and SQ Export Hub participant, MFE, recently attended Expomin. This expo was delivered online for the very first time in response to the global pandemic. Trade and Investment Queensland (TIQ) provided the SQ Export Hub access to their online platform. This provided MFE, a unique opportunity to meet international buyers on a global platform.

MFE Service Manager, Louise McMahon, found the opportunity valuable and amplified confidence in MFE becoming a global supplier. With the assistance from TIQ and the SQ Export Hub, MFE was able to position itself to showcase their capabilities and skillset with potential buyers in the supply of water treatment plants from design, construct, install and commissioning into South American mining operations. From the experience, MFE is able to progress their business strategy, including growth and develop opportunities on a global platform.

Expomin is the principal mining conference event in Latin America.

Promitheia procurement online solutions hosted a webinar earlier in November. CEO Jody Rowe shared valuable insights into the procurement process to ensure procedures are robust and delivering value. This is critical to showcasing your company, and to understand your clients needs, as well as understanding how to manage risk and know the capability and capacity of your business.
