Olympic Swimmer’s advice during troubled times

Locals were treated to an inspiring Friday afternoon, with TSBE hosting a virtual meet up with Olympian, Duncan Armstrong.

Duncan Armstrong is an Olympic Gold Medallist, media commentator and corporate speaker.

He's been Young Australian of the Year, has received an Order of Australia Medal and has successfully inspired countless others to achieve their highest corporate and personal goals.

Since retiring from the pool Duncan has enjoyed careers in television and radio, corporate coaching, charity fundraising and currently works for long term partner Telstra.

Duncan spoke to attendees about having a positive attitude and asking yourself ‘what CAN I do today?’, explaining that his swimming career taught him that success is a process, and that barriers should not stand in the way of your goals.

Duncan shared a story of when he obtained a shoulder injury during his swimming career.  Rather than it causing him to feel defeated, he took it as an opportunity to concentrate on things that he could still do, like leg strengthening,  than what he couldn’t do.

His trainer at the time, Laurie Lawrence, taught him this and Duncan applies this success-oriented attitude to all areas in his life.

Duncan provided advice to attendees about conquering the challenge of change, resilience, mental wellness and even how cope with juggling working from home with kids around during this difficult time.

As a father of five, Duncan admitted that there were certainly challenges he was currently facing during the pandemic, including that of home schooling his children.

However he notes that resilience is key and it’s important to be flexible and to move forward with a positive attitude.
