Happy new financial year! It’s hard to believe we’re halfway through the year already, and what a busy six months it’s been.

Last week TSBE officially launched ‘LIVE Toowoomba’, a new magazine and website which is designed to attract skilled workers and their families to our wonderful region. It focuses on the four pillars of lifestyle, work, recreation and education and will be a useful tool for businesses when targeting job candidates from outside Toowoomba. The magazine was produced as part of a bigger campaign to build on the resurgence currently experienced by regional Australia.

I’m also encouraged by new statistics in a recent report by the Regional Australia Institute (RAI) which support this shift to the regions. The report shows population movements from Australian capital cities to regional areas rose by seven per cent from March 2020 to March 2021. To see why more people are choosing to call Toowoomba home, visit the new website: www.livetoowoomba.com.au.

As TSBE continues to advocate for the sustainable growth of our city, it’s important we understand the region’s capability to help host the 2032 Olympic Games if South-East Queensland is announced as the preferred host. Toowoomba Regional Council, in partnership with TSBE, will undertake an in-depth analysis of the city’s capacity with Council providing a temporary secondment of an officer to undertake the study, to ensure all opportunities are maximised.

This past month we also saw the 2021 State Government Budget handed down. We welcomed funding for a two-theatre day surgery but it was disappointing there was no news surrounding the Toowoomba Hospital Redevelopment Project at Baillie Henderson.

I’m very proud of the number of successful events the TSBE team held in June, including the 400M Agrifood Innovation Forum, the Hydrogen Summit Enterprise Evening in Chinchilla and The Chef’s Table at magnificent Jimbour House. It was wonderful to see Western Downs produce showcased at our Chef's Table luncheon and our thanks goes to the generous local producers who contributed to the amazing gourmet menu.

If we can help link your business with an opportunity don’t hesitate to contact us. Thank you to all of our members for your ongoing support.

Hydrogen Summit Enterprise Evening

More than 200 people attended the recent Hydrogen Summit in Chinchilla on 14 June. It was an informative discussion hearing from industry experts on how our region can adopt and foster hydrogen to our ever increasing brag sheet of energy production. It was great to hear from CS Energy on their proposed project and how they plan to produce locally made H2 at their Kogan plant. As we start our journey to meet emission reductions, one thing is for sure, our region will play a major role in this process. This is due to our regions competitive advantage in new energy production and major infrastructure, supported by the Queensland Government's recent $2 billion announcement to support jobs and industries. Check out the photos here.

More Solar On Its Way

The Western Downs is continuing to build on its status as the Energy Capital of Queensland with the announcement of one of Japan's largest solar investments in Australia - a 204 MW solar farm to be developed at Edenvale near Chinchilla by Japanese companies Sojitz and ENEOS.

Circular Economy

Sustainability in major projects is now a must, not just a want. Project owners are aligning their projects needs to environmental best practice and are seeking cost efficient innovation in tenders and projects which the circular economy will play a major role. The circular economy keeps products and resources working for longer, making their use more efficient while eliminating waste and the continuous use of finite resources.

With the already available resources and products in our region, TSBE and the Ash Development Association of Australia recently conducted an interactive workshop to explore how locally produced by-products from traditional resources industry can provide cost effective and environmental outcomes for civil, rail and building projects. If you are looking for innovation or new products, the TSBE team are happy to connect you to a range of businesses who specialise in these solutions. Please contact lance@tsbe.com.au to discuss this.

COVID-19: this is a timely reminder about the role we all play in ensuring we minimise infection and community transmission of COVID-19. Please ensure you and your businesses representatives are undertaking all precautions and requirements necessary. Our essential workers and businesses have done a fantastic job so far but we need to remain vigilant. We know that many events will be affected so please be prepared, flexible and considerate for others working under restrictions.

Food and Agribusiness

TSBE FLA and the SQ Export Hub has recently been successful in receiving funding for an Ecommerce Pilot Project as part of the Queensland Government’s Economic Recovery Plan to reinvigorate agricultural trade relationships.  The funding program is targeted at providing support for food and ag businesses with the uptake or expansion of e-commerce channels for both domestic and export markets.

The project will work closely with a small group of regional food & ag businesses to understand their current position with ecommerce, undertake an audit of existing technology, management systems and supply chain requirements through to the customer to either kick start or expand their online presence.

The project will develop a growth road map and strategy of engagement to ensure successful uptake of new or improved ecommerce systems and start the ecommerce journey for a targeted range of products with the greatest potential for success.

Expressions of interest are open so to participate in the project, please contact Justin Heaven.

Oil, Gas and Energy Resources

With a strong job market, opportunities for your employees to seek other employment is a real risk. The competing job market and limited resources indicates you should be making sure your skilled employees are engaged and share your vision.

We heard last week from local businesses about the importance of providing a culture and work environment that encourages highly engaged minds with policies and guidelines that set clear expectations for your people.

If your people understand the reason your business exists and know that they are supported, they are more likely to be engaged and stay, even if not paid at the highest rate, that might be available in the current market.

Continuous development and providing clear vision of the business you wish to become are key tools to retain people and encourage powerful decision making.

The program is now in its fourth year and building on the success of the past three years to assist food and ag businesses across the Western Downs who are interested in exporting their products and expanding the domestic market footprint. There is growing demand for our trusted, clean and green products across a range of global markets and the diverse mix of participants in this year’s Shell QGC Emerging Exporters Program offers an exciting opportunity to make inroads into these new markets.

Health 2030

TSBE Health recently launched the Health 2030 - Growing the Economy through Healthcare  discussion paper which is helping to identify the industry’s key growth opportunities and pathways. This is essential to turn the Darling Downs into a regional health powerhouse.

Growing the economy actively through the health industry is absolutely an Australian-first and we already have regional cities ringing us and asking what we’re doing in health.

This is a starting point on the path to developing a road map for growth in health-related services in the Toowoomba and Surat Basin region.

Check out Health 2030 here.

We Can't Wait...

It was good to see that the Queensland Government has committed $42 million over four years to construct a two-theatre day surgery unit at the Baillie Henderson Hospital Campus. We can't wait to see the next steps towards the much needed Baillie Henderson Redevelopment for the Toowoomba Hospital. Check out the video here.

Hospital Health Sustainability Group

On 31 May TSBE was invited to join the Circular Economy Workshop hosted by QHealth Sustainability Network which consists of the private and public hospitals in Brisbane. This work shop was designed to get a better understanding of what the circular economy is and how can it provide value to the heathcare sector.

When’s the last time you took time out to view your business from another angle?

On 2 June a roomful of Western Downs businesses were taken through a strategic process to generate ideas on how to deliver their products or services via different channels to different customers.

The participants at the Commercialisation and Growth Workshop commented on how beneficial it was to do this in a calm, methodical way rather than waiting until a crisis (pandemic!) is on the doorstep.

Keep your eye out for our HR focused workshop in the coming months.
