As we near the end of 2021 I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all our members for your support, during what’s been another busy but still challenging year for businesses. Whilst many sectors have boomed, there have been significant supply issues, especially in the construction sector, as well as skills shortages felt throughout the region.  Despite these challenges, our diverse economy has once again proven to be our region’s greatest strength and things certainly aren’t slowing down just yet.

This month we hosted 160+ people in Chinchilla for the November Enterprise Evening. Our speakers included Andrew Bills, CEO of CS Energy who discussed their upcoming hydrogen project and Jason Eldering, CEO of Southern Cross Care who spoke of their major multi-million-dollar redevelopment of the Illoura Aged Care Facility. Sponsored by Intura, the night was a great success.

The conversation around energy continued at our Boardroom Briefing lunch with Mike Kaiser, Director General of the Department of Resources. It was a great opportunity for our Gold, Platinum and Diamond members to hear about the challenges and opportunities for the energy and resources sector, including the transition towards net zero.  Mike acknowledged the Surat Basin as one of Australia’s most significant energy production regions with coal, natural gas, wind, solar, battery storage, biomethane and soon to be hydrogen.

Last week I was very excited to hear the announcement that Qantas will resume interstate travel from Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport from February next year. Well done to everyone involved in the recommencement of the Toowoomba-Sydney return Qantas flights.

We look forward to hearing from Boeing Defence Australia and Wagner Corporation at our Christmas Enterprise Evening on 9 December at Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport. The region is set to become an aerospace, defence and advanced manufacturing hub with the new Wellcamp Aerospace and Defence Precinct launched by Wagner Corporation.  There will be some big announcements on the night and we’re also hoping that we will be able to do a tour of the completed sections of the quarantine facility (weather depending). If you haven’t already registered, I’d encourage you to do so here to avoid missing out.

As always, please don’t hesitate to contact TSBE if we can help link your business with an opportunity and I’d like to thank all of our members for your continued support.

Wambo Windfarm

TSBE supported the Wambo Windfarm to undertake a virtual supplier’s session in preparation of the award of Balance of Plant and Operations and Maintenance Contractors. Attendees heard directly from Cubico’s Executive Director about the background and opportunities of the project, why they have partnered with TSBE to develop a capability directory through the Supplier Portal and also heard first hand from two of the contractors tendering on this project, outlining their procurement processes and requirements.

The webinar helped regional supply chain businesses understand how they can be involved in the project and what opportunities are available once the next phase of the project begins. If you haven’t completed your capability, you can still do so at Windfarm Capability Mapping | TSBE Suppliers Portal

Chinchilla Enterprise Evening

TSBE recently hosted a very successful Enterprise Evening in Chinchilla with over 160 business leaders in attendance all interested in hearing about the milestone hydrogen project. We also heard from Southern Cross Care Qld Ltd CEO, Jason Eldering on the proposed $35 million landmark partnership for health services for the Western Downs region.

ESG – What Is It?

The COP 26 conference has shone the light on a need for energy sustainability and highlighted the 'ESG' topic. There is a lot of media on this topic at present and in industry we are often accused of using jargon and acronyms. For over 10 years TSBE has been helping shape the discussion around ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) reporting. In a practical view ESG is run from the top down and is a leadership stance - it’s about the right people in regions aligned to a company's long term vision to working and maximising social, economic and local content outcomes in the communities and regions they work. ESG criteria are a set of standards for a company’s operations that socially conscious investors use to screen potential investments.

We have had some amazing outcomes over the last 10 years developing one of the most diverse energy regions in Australia but this could not have been done without working with some of the industry leaders and early adopters of ESG. From these partnerships, we run game changing social and economic projects to support ESG and make change in regions. But now that this discussion is headlining global media, we now can lead the way with our industry partners to set best practice benchmarks outcomes for industry and tell the great story.

Western Downs Christmas Break Up

It was a pleasure to host a number of our Western Downs members at Chinchilla Bowls Club for a game of barefoot bowls. It was a casual way to end a busy year, and great to catch up and network with a range of project and service providers.

New Acland Coal Mine

It is very disappointing that the production of coal has ceased at New Acland Coal Mine leaving many staff seeking new employment. We hope that New Hope Group gain an approval for stage three of the mine expansion bringing jobs back to the region. In the meantime, we thank New Hope Group for all that they have done and continue to support our communities.  The wider circle of economic benefit is hard to calculate, but the income these jobs have provided to our community will be missed and our thoughts are with those families and businesses left with uncertainty at this time of year.

November Meet Up

TSBE in partnership with the Agtech and Logistics Hub hosted our final Meet Up of the year on Tuesday evening, 30 November. There were some great conversations around connectivity, with exhibitors showcasing their technology and solutions at the TAFE Queensland Rural Centre of Excellence. Our guests ranged from wholesale service providers such as NBN Co right through to small to medium sized businesses. This event was also a fantastic way to wrap up Queensland Agtech Month for 2021.

Food and Agribusiness

TSBE's SQ Export Hub in partnership with Food and Agribusiness Growth Centre (FIAL) are hosting a Market Insights & Trade Readiness webinar for the Middle Eastern market on 6 December, showcasing the exciting opportunities available for Queensland exporters looking to diversify markets. Book here: Online - Middle East Virtual Trade Mission Webinar - TSBE. The informative session will provide participants with the opportunity to hear from in market specialists on consumer trends, the latest market update, current business landscape and requirements for export to the Middle East.

While COVID continues to present challenges for international exports through disrupted supply chains, high international freight costs, access to adequate labour and increasing production costs, the outlook for Australian agriculture exports remains positive leading into 2022. With good seasonal conditions and strong demand for Australian products continuing, exporters are well positioned to take advantage of the global economic recovery into the new year. The SQ Export Hub is looking forward to working with members to explore opportunities abroad in 2022 and developing a program of activities to connect with emerging markets and build stronger ties with existing trade partners.

Oil, Gas and Energy Resources

November brought another participant to the SQ Export Hub Energy & Infrastructure cohort. Project Health Monitoring work with teams of staff and HR managers to address mental and social well-being factors in job performance and productivity. They do this through a clever phone or desktop application. Another Oil & Gas contracting firm based in Kingaroy and Brisbane is to be announced next month to make the cohort eight. The group held its last workshop for the year with content and some challenging Q&A on voice of the customer and marketing /branding approaches. Work is being carried out across market research, tendering, international partnering, lead generation as well as on some business improvement templates.

Expression of Interest – two last places exist for the current group. If you are aware of an established supply chain business with a detailed business development opportunity in an export market eventually, or an existing export client and actively seeking more, then please link them with Reagan Parle at reagan@tsbe.com.au. Program participation for 2021/22 requires an investment of $5000 for TSBE membership with matched funding from the Australian Government.
