Dear @{aspediacrm-person-firstname}

We've had a huge few months of 2020 already, kicking off the TSBE events calendar at Parliament House, with close to 400 business leaders gathering in Brisbane to hear about upcoming opportunities in our region. I’m pleased that over 40 State MPs and local government representatives were able to attend and network with our local businesses.

We’ve undertaken two new programs within TSBE this year with a TAFE partnership, to identify training and development needs. We are also reviewing the whole innovation and entrepreneur ecosystem in Toowoomba to determine where we need to improve so that we can attract more entrepreneurs to the region. We’ve commenced the Inland Rail mapping document, which will be a report that shows the local companies who are capable of working on this project and will mean better outcomes for local businesses.

From an advocacy point of view, I’ve been working on opportunities in the SEQ City Deal worth $56 billion, the Olympic bid and Inland Rail opportunities as well as water security for the region.

Our annual Golf Day was a great success with 28 teams competing for the title of 2020 Surat Basin Industry Classic champion. Congratulations to Heritage Bank for taking out the trophy this year!

And that’s just the start to our busy year of events. Upcoming is the Protein 2020 conference in Dalby on 4-5 March. It will be an informative discussion around the beef, dairy, pork and poultry industries including a site tour of Australia's largest feedlot.

Also in the Western Downs is the Shell's QGC Emerging Exporters Program information sessions on 11 March, where potential exporters can find out more about the program and the opportunities for their businesses. Then there is the Business Navigator's Pitch Challenge in Chinchilla on 19 March, where we search for our region’s newest and brightest business ideas and for them to have the chance to win $10,000.

I would like to strongly encourage those planning to nominate for the Surat Basin Energy Awards to join our webinar on 5 March where you will learn more about how to submit a nomination for the awards.

We look forward to welcoming you to our next Enterprise Evening in Toowoomba on 12 March.

Ali Davenport, TSBE CEO

It was exciting to have Wallabies great Nathan Sharpe and All Blacks Legend Andrew Mehrtens play with us on the day and feature in a Q&A session that afternoon.

Gangarri Solar Project in Wandoan

It was great to support Shell's new Gangarri solar project in Wandoan last week. This project is the first utility scale solar project in Australia to support its new energy strategy, and will produce enough renewable energy to power 50,000 homes. A further example of why the Surat region is the energy capital of Australia. We encourage businesses to contact Mitchell to understand procurement requirements.

RES Dulacca Wind Farm

We would like to remind businesses to register their interest to supply goods, services, products or resources to the Dulacca wind farm project. EOI's are due in the first week of March and can be sent to dulaccawindfarm@tsbe.com.au. Or contact TSBE for further information.

Chinchilla Vision 2040

Chinchilla Vision 2040 was a great initiative held by the Chinchilla Chamber of Commerce & Industry to facilitate workshops for their vision for 2040. It was great to hear of the passion to develop the community.

TSBE FLA have been working with members and other businesses around the region and supporting them with the use of the Rural Centre of Excellence, to provide learning and upskilling opportunities.

From the recent Media 101 workshop held at TSBE, we received feedback that members would like to further expand their knowledge around reputation and crisis management. New member BBS Communications Group are keen to engage with our members and will be delivering a Small Group Discussion workshop on 21 April. Register here.

Learning & Upskilling Opportunities

Another event we will be hosting on 31 March is a TECHTalk Forum for businesses across food and agricultural sectors, as well as the wider tech community.

This will be an opportunity to firstly network with industry and then listen to a local business who has embraced the AgTech movement, and as leaders in the industry, learn how we can empower adoption across the region.

Official Opening of the Rural Centre of Excellence

Following on from our Meet Up at the TAFE Rural Centre of Excellence on 30 January, which saw over 80 industry participants tour the facility, the centre was officially opened by the Minister for Employment and Small Business, Training and Skills Development, Hon. Shannon Fentiman. It is exciting to see government support for this level of training being delivered to our regions Food and Agricultural sector.

Through our partnership with TAFE Queensland, we will be working with industry to deliver the training required to take our region forward. If you want to know more contact Jade Hauser on 4639 4600.

evokeAG

TSBE FLA General Manager, Bruce McConnel, along with RDA South West Queensland Director Trudi Bartlett attended the evokeAG conference in Melbourne earlier this month. This conference is now one of the largest Ag innovation conferences globally, and it was great to catch up with members and key industry representatives at the event. If you would like to learn more on the takeouts from this amazing event, please don’t hesitate to contact Bruce to discuss.

Austrade Agribusiness Team Meeting

Through Shell's QGC Emerging Exporters Program, the SQ Export Hub and the other export work that TSBE Food Leaders Australia complete, it is key for us to have great links into the government agencies to support our members going global.  As such, the TSBE Export teams held a session with all Austrade agribusiness staff to promote our region, the work we’re doing and learn of Austrade’s opportunities for our members. Of particular interest is Austrade's commitment to seeking external capital to invest in Australian Food and Agricultural businesses. It was also a great chance to continue to build strong relationships with key sector leads. If you would like to be connected to Austrade, or wish to understand the role they could play in the export or investment journey of your business, please contact one of our Export Managers, Helen Bates or Justin Heaven on 4639 4600 to arrange a meeting.

Australian China Business Council (ACBC) New Year Celebrations

As a guest of the Toowoomba Regional Council, Bruce McConnel attended the annual ACBC New Years Celebration in Brisbane. Whilst this event was at the height of the Coronavirus outbreak, it was exciting to hear of the partnerships being formed through ACBC, TRC and USQ to ensure our region continues to grow into the Chinese market despite the challenges this outbreak is causing. China is still an active and exciting market to pursue and very much open to business. Through the freight capability of the Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport, Toowoomba is in a unique position to still deliver unchanged freight capacity into mainland China.
