TSBE welcomes TRC Economic Stimulus

Statement from TSBE CEO, Ali Davenport

Toowoomba and Surat Basin Enterprise (TSBE) has welcomed the announcement yesterday by the Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) of the first stage of their economic stimulus in response to COVID-19.

The stimulus package includes a raft of economic relief options, including a $125 rate concession for the majority of rateable properties throughout the region.

In addition to the rates concessions, TRC agreed on some further options for the community and businesses, equating to more than $10.5 million in economic relief.

TSBE CEO Ali Davenport said that whilst stage one is obviously focused on immediate support for ratepayers, she believes any further stimulus needs to be measured and take into account the needs of small, medium and large businesses in the region who have been impacted by the downturn caused by COVID-19.
“This is where the Toowoomba Chamber of Commerce and TSBE can assist by giving feedback directly from the business community,” said Ms Davenport.

“I believe the Council’s staged approach to stimulus is a good idea because at this point in time we only have an understanding of the businesses that have been immediately impacted by COVID and have no knowledge of what the long-term issues are likely to be in our region.”

“A staged approach means that Council can potentially assist areas that may not be obvious yet.”

“TRC needs a strong balance sheet for the future so that our region can continue to be a shining light for the rest of regional Queensland.”

“One thing TSBE believes could make an immediate difference in the local economy is a focus on development and infrastructure.”

“We look forward to hearing about Stage Two of the stimulus package and the shovel ready projects that TRC will announce.”

“We know that if TRC can fast-track development approvals that fit within community guidelines and bring forward infrastructure investment, then jobs will be created, and money will flow right throughout the economy.”

“We welcome the Council’s commitment to only seeking quotations from local businesses when procuring works and services up to the value of $200,000 and their 14 day payment terms to local suppliers.”
